FIRST, LDS members trust the spoken words of men without testing against the written words of God.
“As man is, God once was. As God is, man can become.” Joseph Smith, 1844.
The statement above made by Joseph Smith in 1844 is not found in the Book of Mormon, Doctrine & Covenants, or Pearl of Great Price. Nor is it in the King James Bible. It in fact contradicts the written words in LDS scripture and the KJV Bible. See scripture passages below.
-if this statement is untrue, Joseph Smith was not only a false prophet but also guilty of blasphemy.
-Blasphemy was a death sentence as commanded by God from the giving of the Law to Moses in the Old Testament.
-Satan is the only person in the Bible or the Book of Moses who suggested a man can become like God. (Genesis 3:5, Book of Moses 4:11)
-The two people who believed and desired this to be true were expelled from the Garden of Eden and ultimately suffered physical death.
-Joseph Smith delivered a speech at April 6, 1844 Conference (Journal of Discourse,
Vol 6, p. 3) saying: “God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted Man…” and “We have imagined and supposed that God was God from all eternity, I will refute that idea…”
Joseph Smith was dead within 3 months of making these statements.
Alma 13:7
“…being after the order of his Son, which order was from the foundation of the world; or in other words, being without beginning of days or end of years, being prepared from eternity to all eternity, according to his foreknowledge of all things.”-
Mormon 9:9
“ For do we not read that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and in him there is no variableness neither shadow of changing?”
Moroni 8:18
“For I know that God is not a partial God, neither a changeable being; but he is unchangeable from all eternity to all eternity.”
Alma 11:26-29
“And Zeezrom said unto him: Thou sayest there is a true and living God?”
“And Amulek said: Yea, there is a true and living God.”
“Now Zeezrom said: Is there more than one God?”
“And he answered, No.”
Isaiah 44:6 (King James)
“Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.”
SECOND, LDS members trust the feelings of their heart without testing against the written words of God.
Can the HEART alone be trusted? Not according to the King James Bible or the Book of Mormon.
Isaiah 29:13 (King James)
“The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught.”
(Continued next page)
Alma 28:13
“And thus we see how great the inequality of man is because of sin and transgression, and the power of the devil, which comes by the cunning plans which he hath devised to ensnare the hearts of men.”
Helaman 6:21
“But behold, Satan did stir up the hearts of the more part of the Nephites…”
Helaman 6:30
“And behold, it is he who is the author of all sin. And behold, he doth carry on his works of darkness and secret murder, and doth hand down their plots, and their oaths, and their covenants, and their plans of awful wickedness, from generation to generation according as he can get hold upon the hearts of the children of men.”
Mosiah 3:6
“And he shall cast out devils, or the evil spirits which dwell in the hearts of the children of men.”
Alma 8:9
“Now Satan had gotten great hold upon the hearts of the people of the city of Ammonihah; therefore they would not hearken unto the words of Alma.”
THIRD, LDS doctrine equates human works with the suffering Christ endured on the cross.
Third Article of Faith
“We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.”
Obedience and good works of man are not the requirement for salvation, they are our response to having received the GIFT of everlasting life through FAITH. The Book of Mormon and the Bible tell us salvation is a GIFT. Trying to pay for a gift is an insult to the giver.
Ether 12:8-9
“But because of the faith of men he has shown himself unto the world, and gloried the name of the Father, and prepared a way that thereby others might be partakers of the heavenly GIFT, that they might hope for those things which they have not seen. Wherefore, ye may also have hope, and be partakers of the GIFT, if ye will but have faith.”
Romans 6:23 (King James)
“For the wages of sin is death; but the GIFT of God is eternal life.”
Titus 3:5 (King James)
“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us….”
HOW WILL YOU RESPOND TO THIS MESSAGE?
When you stand in judgement before God, will the defense of what you believe be the words of men, the feelings in your heart, or the written words of God? If Joseph Smith has been determined by God to have committed blasphemy, and it was punishable by death in the law given to Moses, could it mean spiritual death and loss of everlasting life to his followers now?
We are all sinners and have fallen short. Repent of any beliefs you had as a follower of Joseph Smith. Ask God for forgiveness as all Christians must do. Accept the gift of God by faith, not works. Believe the Bible and make it the authority of your life. Obey God and do good works in appreciation for what Christ has already done for us. Find a Christian church that adheres to the Apostle’s Creed and considers the Bible to be inspired, infallible, and the ultimate source of truth for mankind.
